Tony Jaa Making Tom Yum Goong 2?
Well, it looks like Tony Jaa is sending shockwaves through the martial arts cinema industry once again as he prepares for a sequel to Tom Yum Goong (the protector.) While there were reports that Tony was working with Sammo on a new film, Sahamongkol Film has announced that Jaa will be working on this sequel. Now, there are several interesting things that need to be noted.
First, not only is Jaa back, but he’s teaming up with his original crew. This means that legendary choreographer Panna Rittikrai and Ong Bak director Prachya Pinkaew will be reuniting with Tony. This is interesting on many levels because Tony actually took over the directing role for Ong Bak 2, taking Pinkaew out of the director’s seat. It seems like the two actually butted heads so much that they stopped speaking to one another at one point.
Second, it has been revealed that Jeeja Yanin will also be working on the movie as well. This means right after Chocolate 2, we will see Tom Yum Goong 2 in production. I’m not sure if the two will be fighting together or against one another, but the idea is promising.
Finally, it is really strange that Jaa went back to his past company to work with them. In truth, the two have not gotten along well since Jaa has caused them to suffer tremendously financially with him leaving the set of Ong Bak 2 and disappointing fans with Ong Bak 3. Behind the scenes, Jaa even hid from the company telling the police that they had sent gangsters after him. Now, I don’t know how much of this is true, but it would take a lot for someone like that to sign another contract.
Regardless of the reason, I’m very excited to see what Tony Jaa can bring to the table. Will he try to win us back with fantastic moves? Did he learn anything new as a monk? Only time will tell as the production date starts to near.
