Sony Buys Rights to Raid Sequel
Haven’t seen the Raid yet? Me neither, but that isn’t stopping Sony from buying up the rights to Berandal, the sequel to the Raid. The following statement has been issued as to what regions Sony has the rights to:
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has pre-bought U.S., Latin American and Spanish rights to the upcoming sequel to Indonesian action feature The Raid… Alliance/Momentum has pre-bought for the United Kingdom and Canada; Koch Media has acquired the film for German speaking territories; Korea Screen has pre-bought Korea; and HGC has pre-bought China. Deals for other major territories are currently in negotiations.
Of course, this is great news for a number of reasons. First, this means that we will be getting a sequel to the Raid. Second, expectations are high enough for me to get excited and possibly be able to see this movie in theaters. Third, Evans and the Merantau team will have a bigger budget to do greater things with action.
If you remember, Berandal was also the original title of the Raid, which was accompanied with this teaser:
I’ve heard the bar has already been raised, I can’t wait to see what a sequel can do. Please Sony, don’t start talking about remaking this one too.
