If you’ve been a regular to the site (sorry for the delay in content, but the way) you’ve probably noticed that I’m a pretty avid fan of Well Go USA. Whenever you see a big Asian release hit the states, they’re typically behind it. I know it’s not martial arts related, but have you seen Train to Busan? It’s been getting immense support and I don’t think anyone saw wow popular it was going to be. Another fantastic movie that’s I didn’t know of before Well Go USA brought it stateside was the Tunnel, which was a pretty awesome story of survival and the moral dilemma about the cost of human life.
Anyways, let’s get back on track and focus on what I wanted to talk about: Well Go USA is on fire lately. Seriously, just look at recent headlines and see how many times their name pops up for new releases. Let’s take a quick look!
First we have Gordon Chan’s period Piece, God of War. This film will start Sammo Hung and Vincent Zhao, but will also feature Yasuaki Kurata (which is awesome!) The story will revolve around a Chinese general who manages to defeat some Japanese pirates using some rather “unique” strategies. Filming starts in March, so expect some more news as production gets closer.
Next up is Benny Chan’s eagerly awaited film Call of Heroes. Sammo is also attached to this film, though he’ll be serving as the action choreographer this time around. The cast is pretty robust though, consisting of Louis Koo, Wu Jing, Eddie Peng, Sammy Hung, Berg Ng, Lau Ching Wan, Phillip Keung, Yuan Quan, and Jiang Shuying. As for the story, it’s going to be another period piece that will have some villagers that stand up to a young warlord. It does sound like another Benny Chan film, Shaolin, but that movie is still one of my favorites, so I can’t wait to see it in theaters this December.
Lastly, but definitely not least, we have a DVD release for the Legend of Bruce Lee: Volume one. What’s interesting about this is that it was originally released as a TV show, but got chopped up and repackaged as a movie stateside through Lionsgate. Well Go USA is rectifying that by releasing 10 episodes in a volume to get the ball rolling. It’s hard to say if the entire series will be released (the original TV run was 50 episodes and currently 30 are being scheduled to release) but if you enjoyed seeing Danny Chan from Shaolin Soccer imitating Bruce Lee, you’ll love to know that he’s playing the lead in this series.
I guess this will give everyone a good idea regarding how Well Go USA has been stepping up their game. Of course, they have an awesome catalog of films including the Ip Man films, Killzone 2, Rigor Mortis, Legend of the Fist and so much more! I just wanted to give props where they were due and can’t wait to see what other awesome films they are able to share with the rest of the world!
