Donnie Yen and Wilson Yip Depart Ip Man 3

by SScalph

ip man 2 wilson yip donnie

It was said back in April of last year that Donnie Yen was going to reprise his role as the title character in the film, Ip Man 3 and Wilson Yip would also be back to direct.  But now, according to a Hong Kong magazine, the film has lost the two men who are responsible for bringing the film franchise to life, Donnie Yen and Wilson Yip.

Director Yip was not happy with the film’s lack of funding and finance and decided to leave the project and he has been replaced with producer Raymond Wong’s son, Edmond.  Donnie Yen soon followed after the director’s departure saying that the film would not work withouth Wilson Yip’s involvement. Yen and Yip have worked together on several films including their first outing together, SPL.

IpMan

Ip Man 3 has been struggling to get funding from Chinese companies who are unwilling to finance the film.  Raymond Wong and Wilson Yip obviously disagreed on the film’s progress as Wong wanted to keep going as scheduled but Yip thought that without the proper funding, the film would be a much lesser effort.

With the duo’s extremely busy schedules conflicting with the film’s shooting schedule set to begin in July and the film producers’ intentions on releasing the film in 3D, it’s very unlikely that the duo will come back to sign onto the film.  Raymond Wong’s daughter, Alvina, said to the possible scheduling conflicts, “We are a listed company, and we signed a contract with the investors. No matter who is in the cast, we will start filming.”

wilson yip

Obviously, this is a massive blow to fans of the Ip Man film series.  Knowing that Donnie Yen and Wilson Yip were planning on coming back and now they will no longer be a part of the film is a major disappointment.  We already know that Wilson Yip has been replaced with producer Raymond Wong’s son, Edmond, to direct the film but who will replace Donnie?  Casting the lead role is going to be a huge task and whoever they cast, that person has some major big shoes to fill and unfortunately, will be compared to the epic talents of Donnie and his performances in the first two films.

What do you think? Are you still excited to see this film or is Ip Man 3 now out the window for you?  Let us know in the comments!

Jason Statham Confirmed For Fast & Furious 7

by SScalph

Jason Statham

There will be some changes with the seventh (I never would’ve imagined there would be 7 Fast films) film in the Fast & Furious film series.  First, Justin Lin will no longer be directing after directed the previous 4 films.  Instead, James Wan of Saw will be directing.  Now, it has been confirmed that Jason Statham will be in the seventh film.  What role he will play has not been disclosed.  In an interview with DesdeHollywood, Michelle Rodriguez, who has played Letty Ortiz in three of the films, more or less confirms Statham’s involvement.

“Jason Statham, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, when you see these guys in a room you know they belong together [...] You can see in their eyes that they have gone through a lot [...] I applaud Universal for getting him on-board!”

Having Jason Statham on board will hopefully mean more hand to hand combat.  It will be interesting to see who he will ultimately play and once that information becomes available, we will let you know.

Fast And Furious Six Fight Featuring Joe Taslim Is Out

by SScalph

If there is more hand to hand combat in Fast Six, then this may be a film that might actually be worth checking out.  While I am not the biggest fan of the Fast and Furious franchise, Six is gearing up to be a welcome addition to the series.  Check out that kick/elbow combo at the end of this clip.  It would’ve been cool if it was shown in one shot but it’s still cool regardless.

What do you think?  Does this clip make you excited for the film?

Police Story 2013 Has First Public Screening

by SScalph

Police Story 2013

Jackie Chan is a busy man (like always).  His new film, Police Story 2013, held its first public screening at the Beijing International Film Festival on April 23rd.

He, alongside many of the cast and crew of the film, were in attendance to see the film in action for the first time to an excited audience.

While the film will bear the Police Story name, director Ding Sheng has said that the film will be a sequel in name only and will have little to nothing to do with the original 4 films in the series.  He also went to say that the film breaks away from the cop movie genre and will mix in many genres including action, crime, cop and suspense.

Police Story 2013 2

Jackie himself has said that the film is a new attempt for him and that he “… had a lot of ‘first times’ in this movie and I’m looking forward to it very much.”

We here at MAMJ even gave you some other details on the film with an interview with Jack Tu that he had with Kung Fu magazine and he said that the film doesn’t have a lot of fighting action but instead a lot of shooting action.

Jackie Chan 2013

To me, this sounds like a mix between Jackie’s own Shinjuku Incident, Jackie’s own Crime Story and Taken.  I’m very excited to see Jackie take the cop genre to another level and we’ll just have to wait and see if he succeeds in his attempt.

It’s getting closer to the release of the film.  So, are you excited?

Jet Li Celebrates His 50th Birthday

by SScalph

Jet-Li-e1335483125847

Happy Birthday Jet Li!

Jet Li turned 50 yesterday (sorry for being a day late!!!) What can we do to celebrate Jet Li hitting the big 5-0?  Well, I thought it would be a cool thing to showcase some of his highlights in his electrifying film career.

Jet Li starred in his first film, Shaolin Temple back in 1982 to great acclaim.  He then starred, in the film that gained him even more stardom, as Wong Fei-Hung in Tsui Hark’s Once Upon A Time In China series and even faced off against Donnie Yen in OUATIC 2. Later on, he starred in his very first Hollywood production, as the bad guy in Lethal Weapon 4. In 2004, he became the star of his very own video game for the Playstation 2 entitled Jet Li: Rise to Honor. He then starred alongside Jackie Chan in The Forbidden Kingdom in 2008 and will once again team up with him in the upcoming Expendables 3.  In 2011, he starred in The Warlords and his performance earned him his first Best Actor award at the 27th annual Hong Kong Film Awards (Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan can’t say they have won an award for Best Actor — even though Jackie’s been nominated like a billion times for the award).

Jet Li Warlords

That’s just a very small tidbit of information regarding Jet’s amazing film career.  Jet Li is now 50 years old and still doing what he does best.  Happy Birthday Jet Li, good luck and best wishes on all your future projects.  Your past, present and future contributions to film will always be appreciated.

Joe Taslim To Star In The Night Comes For Us

by SScalph

NightComesPoster-thumb-300xauto-38125

From the makers of the action packed The Raid: Redemption and Killers comes The Night Comes For Us which will be released by PT Merantau Films.

The film is being co-written by The Raid director Gareth Huw Evans and one of the Mo Brothers (Killers) Timo Tjahjanto.  Joe Taslim, who was seen in The Raid: Redemption and will be seen in Fast Six, will star in the lead role.  Evans is also a producer and Tjahjanto will be directing the film.

gareth-evans-the-raid-2

There is very little information about this upcoming film from Evans and Tjahjanto but the information we do have is that the film will be neo-noir dark action thriller.  Production is set to begin in the fall with everyone slated to work on the film rest up and have a little bit of a break.

VHS2_TimoTjahjanto_byMatahariMahardhika-300dpi

Anything from Evans should be big news especially if you were a fan (like myself) of his film The Raid: Redemption and having Tjahjanto should also escalate this film to more fanfare.

I’m looking forward to seeing more news about this film and I’m excited to see how this film turns out, especially in something like the thriller genre which is always an exciting one for me.  Add that genre with action and you have a winning combination — on paper of course.

DJ Laidback Luke Crowned Kung Fu Champion At World Championships

by SScalph

youredm-laidback-luke

This isn’t your average article that’s posted on Martial Arts Movie Junkie but I believe it’s an interesting one.

Filipino-Dutch DJ Laidback Luke, born Lucas Cornelis van Scheppingen, competed with Team Kung Fu Holland at World Championship 2013 in China winning 4 gold and 1 silver.  Check out his Instagram photo below for the proof!

Laidback Luke

In an interview he had with The Huffington Post, he spoke about his love of martial arts and how he came a master at it.

“As a kid, I was always into martial arts. I grew up doing karate and when I hit puberty, I just kind of forgot it and focused on music more… Going to the gym was never a thing for me, and as a kid I had always wanted to take up kung fu, so I found a good studio and started doing it… I train in the Netherlands, it’s a small town called Leiden. But most of the time, and for these world championships, I train on the road because I’m always traveling.”

SEL-30-THU-laidback-luke2

He also spoke about how other DJs are into martial arts as well.

“I know a couple of DJs that do as well: I heard Nicky Romero is big on jiu-jitsu, I heard Fedde Le Grand is a teacher in Indonesian martial arts, so there are a couple who do it again.”

LAVO_LaidbackLuke_1YrAnniversary_Photo-Cred-Seth-Browarnik

I don’t practice in martial arts but I admire those who take the time and effort to do so.  It takes a lot of will to better yourself through the martial arts.

Who knows maybe this will help spread the love of Electronic music too or perhaps it’s just my wishful thinking.

Sylvester Stallone Chooses New Director For Expendables 3

by SScalph

sylvester-stallone

It’s been known for a while that a third entry in the Expendables franchise (because let’s face it, this is going to be around for a while) was coming out after the expected success of the second film.  We did tell you news that Mel Gibson’s name had been floating around to be a possible candidate to direct The Expendables 3 and even John Woo’s name had been mentioned (Stallone himself even tweeted about it recently saying that he loves Woo but he’s working in China) but now we have the news that Stallone has chosen the new director for the third entry.

Patrick Hughes director

Up and coming Aussie director Patrick Hughes has been chosen by Stallone to take the director’s chair which Hughes, I’m sure, must be ecstatic with this decision.  It’s not every day that you get to direct such big names in the world of action films like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and confirmed new (new?) comer Jackie Chan with the huge possibility of directing Clint Eastwood, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford and Jean Claude Van Damme as well.  Wow, such a big cast of names especially for a new director.

Stallone tweeted with a guessing game to see if anyone could guess who the new director was and you can see below some of the tweets concerning this story.

stallone tweet 2

stallone tweet

Stallone sounds like a big fan of Patrick Hughes and obviously believes he can bring in fresh ideas and a new touch to the Expendables franchise.  As you can see in one of Stallone’s tweets, he says that you “…should go look at Patrick Hughes short film…called SIGNS…” so, go check out the short film for yourself below.

SIGNS

Stallone also says to, “Rent (Hughes’ film) Red Hill.”  You can check out the trailer below to get a feel of what Hughes’ may bring to the table.

Red Hill Trailer

It’s nice to see Stallone bring in a new face to direct the film and while Hughes’ will definitely have his hands full, I believe if Stallone has his faith in the guy, Hughes will do just fine.  So, are you excited for The Expendables 3?  Are you looking forward to seeing how Hughes can bring in some fresh air into the series?   Let us know in the comments below!

New Writer! Meet Shaine Scalph

by SScalph

1366644385860

Hello to all you action junkies out there!  Allow me to introduce myself with a little biography for you all to get to know me a little bit better.  Hey how are you today?  My name is Shaine Scalph (all my posts will be under the name SScalph) and I’ve been writing for a few years writing for other websites including Japan Cinema and Sequel-Buzz. Go check them out if you have the chance. (Sorry, shameless plug!)  I’m half Korean, live in Texas and I love action movies which is why I’m now going to be writing for this very cool website.

I messaged Kelly (THE Martial Arts Movie Junkie) back in December of last year telling him how much I liked the site and that I wanted him to be a guest on a new podcast that I was doing for Japan Cinema.  He was more than willing to guest on it and we worked around our busy schedules to make it happen and I know he has included a couple episodes of the podcast on this website so I’m sure you’ve heard my voice.  A few episodes later, I made him an official part of the podcast, even changing the name to include his name in the title.  Even though the podcast is on hold (at the moment), we had a lot of fun doing the podcast and I know once we start doing it again, it will be shared with all of you each time a new episode is uploaded and ready to go.

I hope to bring my unique perspective to every article posted here.  We want to cause debate and see what you all think of a certain news topic or film review we post.  We don’t all have to agree on things and that’s what makes us human. We want to create exclusive and great content for you all and along with Kelly, be able to do the best job possible to get the results we want.  After all, this is YOUR site too.  We hope that whatever we come up with, you enjoy it and are satisfied with the results.

I am so excited and happy for the chance to be a part of this site and I thank Kelly for letting me do this and allowing me to be a part of this site!  Who knows, maybe you’ll see my ugly mug on a future episode of the Finishing Blow! (Kelly???) Also, you can find me on twitter @RemixOfChoom to see all the (un)interesting things I’m doing or saying.

Alright, let’s see where this journey takes me!

Guest Post:Charles Malcolm’s Top 10 Kung Fu Movies

by kmiller

Note from Kmiller: Earlier in the month, Charles Malcom reached out to me and asked if he could write a guest post on the site about his favorite Kung Fu films. I agreed to let him do it, and this list doesn’t reflect my choices in any manner. I simply took the text and pasted it in here.  Enjoy the list and have fun!

                                                                                             Top 10 Kung Fu Movies

“East Is East, and West Is West and Never the Twain Shall Meet”

This may be the case in regards to why Hollywood stays away from making Kung Fu movies. To them, the definition of Kung Fu is quite blurred, and so, the job of making Kung Movies is entrusted upon the East.

Guys, as soon as read the title of the article, didn’t you feel a burst of explosion? Kung Fu means- “Pow!” and “Boom!” Kung Fu means Action!

If action movies fascinate you, then I think I am having something in store for you. Let’s catch some real action. Grab the list of top 10 Kung-Fu movies of all the time.

The list contains Kung Fu legends like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. However, all the Kung Fu movies display their own masterpieces, but opinions do differ as one excels the other one. Here I bring you the best ever Kung Fu actions straight from the glittering East.

Swordsman

The one armed swordsman (1967)

An amazing movie from the early years of director Chang Cheh shows eclectic blends of Japanese style action, western mutiny, and Chinese wuxia heroes. In the movie you can see the brutal style of Chang Cheh, which dominated regional efforts and not the Peking Opera influenced by King Hu.

36th Chamber

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978)

A Great tale of the Kung Fu school – Shaolin Temple, made its entry in 1978. This movie shows a student (Gordon Liu), who is under rigorous training of the temple monks, before he makes his journey towards his house to defeat an evil lord.

white lotus

Fist of the White Lotus (1981)

Director and actor Lo Lieh plays one of the most notable characters, Pai Mei, a sinister, and unbeatable kung fu priest who appeared in numerous kung fu epic movies.

shaolin temple

Shaolin Temple (1982)

This is the place where Kung Fu, the particular form of martial art has taken birth. Yes, I am talking about the Shaolin Temple. The movie contains some of the most popular subjects regarding martial arts and stands out as the best because of its action hero, Jet Li.

OUATIC

Once upon a time in china (1991)

This is one of those old jet Li movies which has awesome action scenes that are solely made and produced in China. Jet Li plays the physician and martial master Wong Fei Hong, who battles foreign merchants, gangs and corrupt officials. This movie is most notable for its spectacular fight sequences.

Crouching Tiger

Crouching tiger and the hidden dragon (2000)

The characters in the movie are searching a magical jade sword and missing treasure. It is based on the Greek Tragedy storyline and the movie that has made to the award ceremony and received 4 Academy Awards. Its review ratings are quite high, and this movie is now termed as the Kung Fu epic.

kung fu hustle

Kung fu hustle (2004)

This is a comedy Kung Fu movie that stresses exceptional entertainment value attained through martial arts. It has some instances of original comedy, and the choreography and actions are mind blowing. Kung Fu Hustle is a visually spectacular movie, and I don’t think you want to try that Kung Fu lady with hair curlers and cigarette in her mouth.

Fearless

Fearless (2006)

I think this is the best ever Kung Fu made till date. The action, techniques, and art looks sharpened. It tells the story of Chinese Martial Arts Master Huo Yuan Jia, the founder and spiritual guru of the Jin wu Sports Federation. Jet Li portrays the character of Huo Yuan Jia.

Shaolin-Soccer

Shaolin Soccer (2001)

This is directed by Stephen Chow, is known for its good fighting scenes, special effects, and iswith bursting comedy scenes. Here we will find that the football maniac Kung Fu players use their martial art skills to play soccer and this concept is no doubt amazing.

Ip man

Ip-Man (2008)

Donnie Yen has given his breakout performance in this movie. Everything, starting from plot, choreography, setting, cinematography and performances all are superb. When Ip Man’s son, Ip Chun saw the movie for the first time he felt exuberant. Donnie seems to exist with the soul of Ip man in the movie. In one word, it is a true Kung Fu movie with packed action.

These are just a taste of some the films that will satisfy your hunger for action. There’s more and among them this ten are no doubt the best.
