Black and White Episode 1: Dawn of Assault Review

Background Info

Based on a popular Taiwanese drama, Black and White is a prequel that takes everything to the next level. With a large budget to fund the action and bring in some talent from other countries, audiences had a lot to look forward to. Martial arts fans could rest assured that Cyril Raffaeli would be handling the choreography, so the fights would have a good impact. Does more money lead to better action, and does Taiwan prove that it knows a thing or two about creating a good film overall?

Black and White Episode 1 Trailer

Story/Characters

The story to Black and White is, well, pretty black and white. The setup is basically there for the action setpieces, and those that watch dramas regularly will most likely see the plot twists coming. While some scenarios have interesting takes on them, nothing really shines or gets people invested into what it going on. It’s clear that this is an action film first and foremost, and the story is taking a back seat.

B&W2

The characters are pretty standard for a movie of this type. While I haven’t seen the drama and don’t know how this piece fits into the puzzle, there isn’t the same level of depth here. Granted, the timetable made it hard to add too much story. What you get here is a large cast of characters that have a little history and nothing else. Even the two main characters don’t divulge in their past, though it’s hard to do when everything is exploding around you.

Action/Choreography

If you’re looking for action, Black and White has it in spades. The film almost never stops, and the into sequence shows you how big of a budget the movie had. Everything explodes, even if it doesn’t need to. The best way to think about this is as a Taiwanese Die-Hard film. It never lets up.

B&W3

This happened after shooting out a tire, seriously

Speaking of Die-Hard, the fighting is actually pretty good. There aren’t any real standout moments, but it’s not distracting either. Everyone did a good job with the choreo, and there were some interesting situations for the characters that were fighting. Will it make you want to watch fights over and over again? No, but you won’t be disappointed either.

Own it, Watch it, Try it, or Skip it?

There are two things I remember about Black and White Episode 1: Dawn of Assault. Lots of explosions and it’s really long. Now, given the fact that it’s based off of a drama that goes for about an hour an episode, it’s easy to understand why the length is what it is. That’s not an excuse for how long the film it, but some may be able to sit through it better knowing that.

B&W1

Even though this is called “Episode 1” there is a lot of stuff thrown in here. Overall, I enjoyed the film and give props to the Taiwanese film industry for taking a step forward and making a big budget action film. While it may borrow from mainstream films and defy logic sometimes, it’s still a fun film that will help pass the time…a lot of it.

As you can see, there aren’t a ton of martial arts films this year. The Viral Factor, Tai Chi 0, Flying Swords of Dragon Gate and Black and White seem to be the only ones that really got any nominations. I’m curious about China Heavyweight, as I’ve only seen the trailer for it, but haven’t heard how much people liked it.

To be honest, I don’t know how many victories the martial arts side of things will see, as I don’t really think Flying Swords was even that strong of a contender.

Anyways, I’ll post the results when I find them out, but feel free to speculate until then!

New Posters for Black and White

by kmiller

The Chinese release date for Black and White is right around the corner, and these characters posters have been released to help hype up the film.

While I like these posters, I think the original Taiwanese ones were cooler. You can check them out here on my old link.

Granted, posters aren’t what make the film, and I’m still really eager to see how this movie plays out. Hopefully I won’t have to wait much longer to see it myself.

Black and White Part 1 Hits China on June 21st

by kmiller

Black and White: Dawn of Assault hit Taiwan earlier this year in January. I haven’t heard much feedback about the film, either good or bad. That being said, it apparently did well enough to get itself introduced into the Chinese market. Based off of a Taiwanese drama, Black and White has a lot to prove to grab the attention of the general public.

For those of you that need a refresher, here are 2 trailers that released to help promote the film:

Personally, I’m interested in seeing what the film has to offer. I’m still getting a New Police Story vibe from the film, which isn’t a bad thing, really. I want to see Cyril Rafielli’s choreography as well, since that sounds pretty promising. Also, since this is part 1, you know that the team has faith in their project. I’m hoping for an even more explosive trailer as that release date of June 21st nears.

New Images for Black and White (Updated!)

I know I’ve got a bias toward movies that are set in present day right now, but that’s because they are so few and far between. One movie that has caught my eye is Black and White Episode 1: Dawn of Assault. It’s based off of a popular Taiwanese TV drama, and it sounds like it’s done well enough to earn a film version of the show.

Anyways, I’ve found a number of posters for the movie, so check them out below.

Not bad, right? I’m really excited to see how the movie does. I still get a New Police Story vibe from the film, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. For those that haven’t seen yet, here is a trailer of Black and White:

Black and White Trailer

Now, I don’t know too much about the show but I’m guessing Taiwanese shows follow the same pattern as Japanese shows. In other words, I’m gonna draw a parallel to the Bayside Shakedown show in Japan. Not the comedy aspect, but the fact that both were popular police dramas that became successful movies as well.

Am I off on this assumption? Does anyone know if the show is worth a watch? Let me know.

(Update!) New Trailer!
