Before you say anything, yes, I know this is pretty much yesterday’s post. I debated whether I should update yesterday’s or make a new post, but figured that a whole new post would be easier to scroll through.
First up is a different character trailer for Man with the Iron Fists. This one focuses on Madame Blossom and is brought to you via IGN:
Everything I’ve seen so far seems to be repeat of the original trailer. There isn’t really anything new here, and I’m starting to wonder why that is. Some people might like watching the same trialer re-cut over and over, but I’m not one of them. However, it looks like we will be getting character trailers for the 4 main characters of the film.
Switching gears, a US trailer has been released for Dragon (aka Wu Xia.) This isn’t really anything new or groundbreaking, but I figured it was enough to get people interested if they missed the original release. Check out the trailer courtesy of Beyond Hollywood here:
Personally, I didn’t think that Wu Xia was that bad. I think the trailer is a little misleading, as the majority of the film focuses on the mystery behind Yen’s character and not the fights, but whatever. It has a limited release on November 30th, will be on Apple’s site starting on October 26th, or you could just import it and watch it that way too.
Lastly, we have a new BTS video for Chinese Zodiac. I can’t speak or read Chinese, but I’m glad that the video shows more of the fighting that we’ve come to expect with Chan’s films. I love the repeated takes to get one shot right!
If there are any fellow Youtubers out there that might know how to stop my video from stuttering, I’m open to any suggestions. Thanks and enjoy the video!
It looks like Special Identity is wrapping up, and some new images have been released. Twitch has posted this awesome picture that is sure to get everyone riled up:
Yeah, this image just looks so awesome to me. Maybe it’s the posture of Donnie or the action in the photo, but it sure looks like they are trying to capture the essence of Flash Point here. Anyways, a little more digging led me to some behind the scenes images and other photos from the film. You may have already seen some of them, but I figured I would share them all in case others haven’t yet.
Even though Special Identity got a lot of bad press, I think it may have made it a better movie in the end. Think about it, do you think they would have pushed as hard to do good action and get rid of the negativity of the film if Vincent Zhao said nothing? I’m not taking sides, but it’s very possible that this movie went from “decent” to “amazing” because of the extra push.
I’ll wait for a trailer to make a real judgement on the film, but these images make the wait that much harder.
I’m just going to go ahead and apologize for the long wait and not great video. I hit every possible roadblock today, including webcam freezing, incompatible files, and slow video conversions. The audio is pretty weird, and I’m still trying to understand what conversion made it lose quality. I’m hoping for smoother sailing next week. Sorry again, guys.
It looks like Donnie Yen and Cung Le are going to work with each other once again. Le tweeted an image of him and Yen together, saying “Donnie and I talked about working together again next year!”
Some of you might remember Le’s fight against Yen in Bodyguards and Assassins, which was pretty impressive. I think that it could have been a little better, but a rematch could be exactly what we are looking for.
In (maybe) other news, there is information going around that Donnie Yen will be working on a remake of the Last Boyscout. The film will be a HK remake of the Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans film that Tony Scott made back in 1991. There is a possibility that Bey Logan will play the role that Bruce Willis had.
Seriously, here is the exact quote from Bey:
To honour the memory of Tony Scott, we’re remaking The Last Boy Scout in Hong Kong, with me in the Bruce Willis role.
I don’t know how this remake will work or if this is the same project Cung Le was talking about, but it is interesting regardless. I’m glad that Yen has stopped with period films for now and gone back to contemporary films.
I’ll keep you guys posted as I learn more, but interesting projects for Donnie nonetheless!
Once again, sorry for the bad camerawork. I did better last week, but this one is right on the edge. I’m thinking about trying something new next week (if I get the time)
There was a rumor a while back that Tony Jaa would be collaborating with Sammo Hung for a project. It appears that the film in question is actually a sequel to SPL (or Killzone.) Twitch has reported that this sequel will star both Sammo Hung and Wu Jing, and that Donnie is currently in talks to make a return as well.
As excited as I am to see this film happen, there are still a lot of questions that are unanswered. How will this sequel make sense plotwise? Is Wilson Yip directing? Who will Tony fight against? Yeah, I think you catch my drift.
I think that this is a great opportunity for Tony, though I don’t know if he will play a big role or not. The fact that he is working with Sammo is huge enough, and I would just love to see Jaa and Yen go at it. It makes me think about the end fight to Flash Point, which you may remember originally was supposed to be a sequel to SPL as well.Filming is slated to start next year.
Maybe this is in the near future?
I’ll keep you guys posted as I learn more, as I’m sure a lot of people are going to be interested in this collaboration.
This week has been very crazy, but I think I like crazy. Let me know if you guys have anything you want to see added to the site, and I’ll do my best to get things worked out.
Donnie Yen goes back to the Three Kingdoms period to play a man named Guan Yu. He teamed up with directors Felix Chong and Alan Mak while acting as the action director himself. Would he be able to capitalize on his recent fame and prove he’s more than a one-trick pony?
While you might not believe it at first, the story is one of the strongest things that the Lost Bladesman has going for it. There is a very interesting sway in allegiances that gives the plot the right pacing to keep people guessing. While it’s not a mystery as to who is doing what, the story brings these events to light at the right times to make you wonder how it will affect the characters. I’m not a history buff (by any means) and the story was simple enough to let me know what was going on while being interesting enough to keep me engaged.
The characters themselves are pretty interesting for the most part. Donnie Yen shines here as Guan Yu, a man who is forced to face his loyalty many times over. The character himself isn’t very deep, but that’s exactly what makes him so great. You see his evolution over the course of the film, as he wonders what’s really going on. Donnie has played stronger characters before, but it’s clear that he is becoming a good actor. Cao Cao is done very well also, striking a nice balance between suspicious and trustworthy.
Action/ Choreography
The Lost Bladesman is an action film, but you won’t know it until the film hits the halfway mark. You’ll hardly see any action until that point, but when it happens, it’s awesome. The fights are very well done and have that “Donnie” flair to them. One of my favorite fights didn’t even actually show anything, but was done in such an interesting way that it stuck with me. There might be a sense of déjà vu with one of the fights when compared to Seven Swords, but overall the action is great.
Own it, Watch it, or Skip it?
The Lost Bladesman is a very strong film that has a lot going for it. While you may have to wait a bit for some fights to break out, the story is paced well enough to keep you entertained until that happens. Donnie is definitely growing as an actor, but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten his roots at all. I don’t’ know if I’d go as far as saying this film is a must have, but I strongly suggest you give it a watch.
