Leeder and Law Join the Berandal Cast

by kmiller

It’s been a while since I’ve covered anything about Berandal, but that doesn’t mean the team isn’t hard at work on the film. Evans has been tweeting updates very frequently, giving away little tidbits of info for those that are hungry enough. It sounds like they are just about finished filming a 5-day long car chase:

Evans

Final prep ahead of day 5 of the car chase. Promise we won’t disrupt traffic too much :)

I’m really curious to see how Evans and the team will handle a car chase, as you know it won’t be your typical chase scene. What makes it even more curious is the fact that Bruce Law and Mike Leeder will be joining the team for the sequences.

Bruce Law

Very excited to have Bruce Law, his stunt team  joining for the car chase. Exciting times.

Bullet In The Head, Operation Condor, Hard Boiled, Special Identity – just some of Bruce’s work. To say we are excited is an understatement.

I love how Evans just dangles the carrot right in front of our faces, letting us know that the film is still going strong and that there will be plenty more to come. Don’t believe me? Read this tweet:

Graeth-and-Iko

Yeah so far I’ve cut 48mins worth of action scenes. We still have around 4-5 action scenes left to shoot. Fun fun fun

Anyways, I’ll try to keep you guys posted when the big news gets revealed. Be sure to follow Gareth Evans on twitter to get all the best details the moment they drop!

Details on Favela and the Price of Success

by kmiller

I finally get to tell you guys about some awesome films that are coming down the pipeline. The first is called Favela, and it stars Undisupted 2 and Spawn star Michael Jai White. The film is going to be a series, tracking the story of a man named John ‘Falcon’ Chapman and his journey for revenge.

Favela 2

The film will be directed by Assassination Games and Six Bullets director Ernie Barbarash, who also hopes to pump out 1 to 2 of these films a year. The first film will take place in Brazil, where Falcon journeys to find the killer of his sister. If these images are anything to go by, there will be plenty of action to be had.

Favela 1

I don’t know how the filming schedule will be, since 1 to 2 films on this series is pretty demanding. If things go well, White has a solid role ahead of him, but he won’t be able to do many more projects. I’ll keep you posted as I learn more.

Price Success Poster

Next up, I want to cover a film that features a star from the film Merantau. While most people think about Iko Uwais and Gareth Evans (among others) there are some that didn’t appear in the Raid. However, the end fight to the film was a spectacular one, and Laurent Buson was one of the opponents. He also belongs to a talented stunt group called the Z Team, and they have just released a trailer for their next film, the Price of success.

Price Success 2

The film will follow a group of men that are forced to fight one another to save their loved ones until only 1 remains. The plot isn’t anything new, but the trailer gives off a Kill Em’ All or BKO vibe. Check it out here:

Price of Success Trailer

I’m excited to see how this film turns out, and I love any movie that doesn’t rely on wires and CG. The team looks like they are in top shape, and the fights may surprise a few. I’ll be checking it out, for sure!

Joe Taslim To Star In The Night Comes For Us

by SScalph

NightComesPoster-thumb-300xauto-38125

From the makers of the action packed The Raid: Redemption and Killers comes The Night Comes For Us which will be released by PT Merantau Films.

The film is being co-written by The Raid director Gareth Huw Evans and one of the Mo Brothers (Killers) Timo Tjahjanto.  Joe Taslim, who was seen in The Raid: Redemption and will be seen in Fast Six, will star in the lead role.  Evans is also a producer and Tjahjanto will be directing the film.

There is very little information about this upcoming film from Evans and Tjahjanto but the information we do have is that the film will be neo-noir dark action thriller.  Production is set to begin in the fall with everyone slated to work on the film rest up and have a little bit of a break.

Anything from Evans should be big news especially if you were a fan (like myself) of his film The Raid: Redemption and having Tjahjanto should also escalate this film to more fanfare.

I’m looking forward to seeing more news about this film and I’m excited to see how this film turns out, especially in something like the thriller genre which is always an exciting one for me.  Add that genre with action and you have a winning combination — on paper of course.

Images for Berandal and News on Chinatown

by kmiller

It looks like I’ve got some good news and some bad news today. Let’s start with the good news. Berandal is right on track and filming is going well. Director Gareth Evans was kind enough to upload a few pics of what we can expect. In case you don’t know what to expect, it’s gory.

The Raid 2 Image 2

The Raid 2 Image

It’s easy to see that the bigger budget is being used very well. However, that doesn’t mean money is just being thrown away. You can read Gareth Evans’ twitter to learn how to make a squib by using some condoms. Yup, you read that right. I hope that we are able to see some sample rehearsals or fights in the weeks to come.

Cho Lon Poster

Ok, now on to some more disheartening news. If you’ve been looking forward to Johnny Nguyen’s Chinatown (or Cho Lon) you might have to wait for a while. It’s been reported that censors have not approved any version of the film and the movie has been put on hold.

Chinatown

I’m not sure what’s causing the issue. It could be the violence or a specific sequence, but it seems like more than one version was submitted and shut down.  If the film does not get approved, it won’t get international clearance either. It’s sad to know there are still countries that have to pass censorship laws (especially when I talk about Berandal in the same article) but it makes me realize that creative freedom isn’t equal in all countries.

Hopefully we will hear good news about Johnny Nguyen and learn when his film will be released.

More Berandal Cast Members Revealed

by kmiller

So, while this one isn’t official, the fact that Gareth Evans tweeted about it makes it sound legit to me. Three Japanese actors are apparently joining the cast of Berandal. They are Ryuhei Matsuda, Kenichi Endo, and Kazuki Kitamura. The three will be playing Japanese gangsters, and Evans is pretty excited for it.

Berandal Actors

I’m absolutely thrilled to have them involved in the project. I’ve been a  fan of Japanese cinema since childhood and these guys have been a major part of the very best of them so it goes without saying that we can’t wait to set them loose on the bloody battlegrounds of a Jakarta gang war!

I’m more curious as to how the Japanese even fit into the picture. It looks like this movie is going to have more story as well as carnage. Can’t wait!
