Sony Buys Rights to Raid Sequel

by kmiller

Haven’t seen the Raid yet? Me neither, but that isn’t stopping Sony from buying up the rights to Berandal, the sequel to the Raid. The following statement has been issued as to what regions Sony has the rights to:

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has pre-bought U.S., Latin American and Spanish rights to the upcoming sequel to Indonesian action feature The Raid… Alliance/Momentum has pre-bought for the United Kingdom and Canada; Koch Media has acquired the film for German speaking territories; Korea Screen has pre-bought Korea; and HGC has pre-bought China. Deals for other major territories are currently in negotiations.

Of course, this is great news for a number of reasons. First, this means that we will be getting a sequel to the Raid. Second, expectations are high enough for me to get excited and possibly be able to see this movie in theaters. Third, Evans and the Merantau team will have a bigger budget to do greater things with action.

If you remember, Berandal was also the original title of the Raid, which was accompanied with this teaser:

I’ve heard the bar has already been raised, I can’t wait to see what a sequel can do. Please Sony, don’t start talking about remaking this one too.

The Raid Coming to the States on March 23rd

by kmiller

After seeing the amazing footage that’s been around the net recently, I’ve been looking hard for any more information I can find about the Raid. The Sundance Film Festival is still going on, so I can only hope for more info as the festival comes to a close. That being said, I’ve found several sites confirming what I was hoping was true: the Raid will be in the US on March 23rd.

Now, I’m not sure if this will be a limited release or not, but I’ve got a sinking feeling it will be. The reason for this is because of the fact that the US remake is still a very real possibility, and I don’t think Sony Pictures will risk losing any steam for their version. With all of the recognition and praise the Raid is getting, I really hope it hits theaters in all major cities. Also, don’t forget that MTV has been pushing the film quite a bit and that Mike Shinoda did the soundtrack the the US version.

In case you haven’t seen these fight sequences yet, you need to check them out. You’ll quickly see why this movie has been so hyped over the past few months.

I’ll post more as I find it, but I’m really excited with the idea of being able to see the Raid on the big screen. If it comes out anywhere near me, it will be a must-see for me.

I’m going to go ahead and apologize for the extra-shaky camera this time. I think I was walking faster because of the rain, and didn’t realize it until it was too late. Sorry, and I’ll be better about it next week!

Also, thanks to Danis and EvilDollaR for their links with the Raid fight scenes!

Bonus Post: 4 on 1 Fight Scene from the Raid

by kmiller

I’m gonna keep this short and sweet since it’s a bonus post, but a fight clip from the Raid just recently hit the internet. Check it out here:

I can’t wait to see this movie, either in theaters or in my home. The word on the street is that this movie should be out in the states in March. No word on how limited the release will be, but it will be showing at the Sundance Film Festival, so fingers crossed.

I still don’t think a remake is needed, especially if the team performs like this throughout. It’s gonna be a wild ride.

Quick little update to include a hallway fight from IGN.com. Special thanks to Danis for the link:

The Raid Getting a Remake?

by kmiller

So a friend recently posted a link to this article, and I just had to take my own space and vent a little. Before we go too far into the specifics, let’s get the basic information out of the way.

Filmjunk.com has reported that Sony Screen Gems is in negotiations to get the rights to remake the movie, which can be added to the fact that Sony owns the distribution rights for the US. It has also been reported that Evans was offered a chance to direct the remake, but declined so that he could focus on a sequel.

Really guys? You really asked the director of the original film if he wanted to remake his own movie? Why would he even agree to that. Better yet why remake it?

I see this more as a problem with people not wanting to “read” subtitles, which is a terrible excuse. The reason why the Raid is great is because of the hard work that Iko Uwais and the team put into the film. It can’t simply be recast and rewritten and have the same effect. It upsets me that execs simply think that remaking the film will net the same success.

Do you really think you can remake this?

Anyways, I’m sure I’ll have more to vent about when I film the Finishing Blow. Be sure to sound off on how you feel as well.

Special thanks forFilm Junk for the original article.
