Ip Man 3 Not Happening?

by kmiller

Donnie Yen is a very busy guy. He’s been hard at work on a number of different films and just started his own production company earlier in the week. It’s called Super Hero, and it’s Donnie’s way of finding new talent and putting them into the industry. It also gives Yen the freedom to make the films he wants, and that may not include Ip Man 3.

Ip Man 3 Poster

It appears that Wilson Yip has lost his desire to create another film because Ip Man has become so mainstream. If this is true, then Donnie has said that he would not play the role either.

While it’s sad to think about the fact that we’d be one Ip Man movie away from a trilogy, it makes sense. If the director is not passionate about the project, the end result will not be as good. Plus, the whole idea of it being in 3D was kinda terrifying anyways.

Donnie Yen to Star in Crouching Tiger Sequel?

by kmiller

The sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has a long road ahead of it. Both Ang Lee and Ronny Yu have turned down the chance to direct the film, and it’s still unclear who will be starring in the film. Word has come across that Michelle Yeoh will be returning, and now there are talks of Donnie Yen playing a star role as well.

Yen

People have approached Donnie about this offer, and he’s rather stunned that word has gotten out so quickly.

Here’s his response:

“I would certainly consider carefully, but there are two things that I am concerned about: firstly, my schedule for the year is really packed, and secondly, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is considered a classic so I feel pressured if I were to act in its sequel.”

Yeoh

I feel like the word “packed” is an understatement. Yen is still filming the Iceman Cometh 3D and needs to work on Ip Man 3D. Plus, he’ll be promoting Special Identity and who knows what other films he has booked for the year. I’d be curious to see how Yen fits into the story, but I’m not too sure we can count him in just yet. I agree with his statement about pressure, though. Anyone who signs on will be feeling that pressure. Hopefully it’s worth it.

Would you guys watch the sequel if it had Yeoh and Yen in it? Who would you want to see in the cast?

Ip Man final battle poster

Ip Man the Final Fight (or Battle for some locations) is shaping up to be an interesting film. Wong will be bringing a more dramatic character to the film, but that doesn’t mean there is anything lacking in the action department. If you’ve seen the trailer, you know that Eric Tsang and Anthony Wong face off against each other.

Ip Man: The Final Fight Trailer

Apparently, this duel took over six hours to get right. That doesn’t mean it was all work and no play, the two actually had fun doing their parts. About three hours of the rehearsal were to ensure that the fight could be completed in one take. While I doubt that the whole sequence will be shown in one take, it’s impressive that Tsang (age 60) and Wong (age 51) pulled it off.

I’m really curious how this fight will play out, and it may just be enough for me to give this film a shot. I’m hoping that the reception is good, and that we’ll see a great new addition to the Ip Man franchise.

Ip-Man-the-Final-Battle-Poster

It’s been a while since we’ve heard about Ip Man: The Final Battle, but a new trailer has helped keep things fresh in our minds. This film covers the later years of Ip’s life, and has Anthony Wong playing the (now famous) martial artist.

While this isn’t a third installment by Wilson Yip, it has enough going for it to make you wonder how the film will turn out. Give the trailer a look to see what I mean:

Ip Man: The Final Battle Trailer

Personally, I kinda lost it at Eric Tsang. I don’t know how I feel about him having a serious fight with Wong. That being said, I like Anthony Wong as an actor, and think that he can bring a lot more to the character than what we’ve seen. I know that he slimmed down for the role and that he spent a lot of time training as well. Let’s hope that this one is better than the prequel that came out a few years ago.

Trailer for Fist of Legend and News on Ip Man the Musical

by kmiller

Quick question: what do you think about when you hear “Fist of Legend?” If you thought about Jet Li’s epic martial arts film, you’ll be quite confused to learn that there is a Korean film being released that has nothing to do with that movie at all.

Fist of Legend

The movie is directed by Kang Woo-suk and will based off of a webcomic series. The story revolves around a group of past fighting legends that enter the ring once more for their own reasons.

While the trailer hasn’t been subbed yet, you can check it out below:

Fist of Legend Trailer

Initially, I think that the title choice is rather strange. Most people (if not all) are going to think this is some remake of the Jet Li film. It sounds like the movie will be more similar to Warrior than anything, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The action looks solid, and I’m sure that the story will be good as well. I’ll keep my eye out on this one, to be sure.

Let’s try another question, shall we? When you think of Ip Man, what comes to mind? Probably a solid set of films based on the master as well as a TV series in the works. However, all of that will go out the window, because a musical interpretation has been announced. Seriously.

The musical will have Kawai Kenji (composer on the original film) teaming up with Briton Martin Koch to create all of the music. Bey Logan is the playwright for the musical, and it will be released sometime in 2014. Logan has stated that only about 30% of the musical will be martial arts oriented.

Ip Man Musical

“The kung fu fighting we have will be spectacular, and a highlight of the show, but it still has to deliver as a musical, with a great story and songs, even without the martial arts element,”

The musical will actually be released in English first, and then Chinese later on.

Ok, so my initial thought is that this is just weird and comes out of left field. Yes, I know about Chinese opera and that any story can be changed into a musical, but what’s going on? First Jackie, and now Ip Man? I’ll judge a musical by the music (just like a martial arts film is based on the fights) but it’ll take a lot of convincing to get me on board.

What do you guys think?
