Trailers for Angels and Once Upon a Time in Shanghai

by kmiller

Okay, it looks like I made a mistake. The Once Upon a Time in Shanghai that stars Phillip Ng and Sammo Hung and is being produced by Wong Jing is not the same one as the one that stars Chow Yun Fat and Sammo Hung which is directed by Wong Jing. Get that? Yeah, me neither. However, there is a teaser trailer for Phillip Ng’s Once Upon a Time in Shanghai.

Once Upon a Time in Shanghai

While this doesn’t really show any footage, I like the old-school feel it gives off. It lets you know what Yuen Woo Ping will be choreographing the action while letting Ng’s action’s speak for themselves. I’m excited to see where this project goes.

Next up is a trailer for a movie called Angels. It stars Dustin  Nguyen and I gotta say, the trailer looks pretty slick.

Angels Trailer

I know Dustin from being in the Rebel, and I thought he was an awesome villain. However, I didn’t realize how English-heavy this film was going to be. It will be directed by Wych Kaosayananda and has a number of action veterans listed, including Gary Daniels.

No release has been announced yet, but Angels should be coming out later this year.

Philip Ng Joins the Cast of Once Upon a Time in Shanghai

by kmiller

I wrote about Sammo Hung and Chow Yun Fat working together on Once Upon a Time in Shanghai recently, and it looks like another name can be added to the list. Phillip Ng will be in the film, playing the role of Ma Wing Ching. I’ve found a basic synopsis that also explains Philip’s character and what we can expect.

Ng plays Ma, a boxer from Shantung who finds himself in early 20th century Shanghai, which is being torn apart by two rival gangs, the Axe Fraternity & the Kung Fu union. Ma’s righteous ways and impressive martial arts skills bring him to the attention of one of the gangs, but Ma wants to earn his living by honest means and his integrity earns him respect from one of the gang leaders. But internal rivalry within the gang, not to mention the activities of Japanese spies within the city draw ma into conflict as he’s forced to fight for himself and his friends once and for all.

To be honest, this sounds like it could be pretty good. I think it’s safe to assume that Sammo and Yun Fat will play rival bosses, as I think this would be the best way to create tension and solid action. While this may not be the case, the basic plot proves that there is going to be plenty of action to be had.

If you take a look at the poster I’ve uploaded, you’ll also see that Yuen Woo Ping is listed as the action director. I’ll be honest, I’m really starting to look forward to what this movie has to offer. With Sammo Hung, Chow Yun Fat, Yuen Woo Ping, and Philip Ng already on board, I can’t wait to see who else is announced and how the action will pan out.

Sammo Hung and Chow Yun Fat Team up for Once Upon a Time in Shanghai

by kmiller

Pretty big news coming out at the beginning of the week about 2 of the biggest stars in the industry. Chow Yun Fat and Sammo Hung will be working together for a true crime film titled Once Upon a Time in Shanghai. Andrew Lau will produce the film while Wong Jing will direct.

Before I get any of your hopes up, I don’t think this has anything to do with any of the “Once Upon a Time in…” films. Firstly, it’s a crime film, so that pretty much proves it won’t be a Wong Fei-Hong film. In fact, it will actually follow a crime boss known as Du Yuesheng.

Details are scarce at this point, so I’m not sure what genre this film will fall into. I think it’s safe to say that it will be either a gun-blazing action film or a deep crime-thriller. Either way, I know that Chow Yun Fat and Sammo Hung have what it takes to deliver. Let’s hope they don’t put this awesome talent to waste.
