There was a really high demand for Chuck Norris. So high, in fact, that producers agreed to have the Expendables 2 lowered to a PG-13 rating so that Chuck would join the film. Norris claimed that none of his previous films were rated R, and he refused to do one now. I like that attitude, as Jackie has held a similar standard so that younger fans can watch his films.
You can watch a video interview here, but it’s really hard to understand what is being said over the translator:
Here is a rough translation of what is being said:
With The Expendables 2, you have a lot of hard language in there that means that means that young people won’t be able to see it. I said, I don’t do movies like that. I didn’t do them in the past, I didn’t do them on my TV series. I said, you have to cut out all the language, hardcore language or I can’t do it. So they did, and Expendables is now a PG-13 film so kids can see it.
Now, I understand that some are going to be upset by this decision because they won’t get the gratuitous violence they were hoping for from the first one. I’m not one of them, as I can do without the gore as long as the action is good. In fact, there may be even more clever uses for fight choreography since they simply can’t rely on exploding bodyparts or limbs being hacked off.
What bothers me a little is the fact that if the Expendables 2 is PG-13, you know there’s going to be an unrated version later on. If they don’t bundle it with the initial release, there really isn’t any reason to even buy the movie when it first comes out.
So, what do you guys think? You agree with the decision to lower the rating, or would you rather have no Chuck Norris and more violence?
