The Four Review

by kmiller

Background Info

Director Gordon Chan brings Woon Swee Oan’s novel to life, using a strong cast to pull in viewers. The film revolves around a set of characters that are gifted with certain powers, each with their own powers and abilities. Does Chan have what it takes to breathe life into these characters and complete the trilogy he set out to create?

The Four Trailer

Story/Characters

I wish I could tell you about the story to the Four, but I’m still sorting it all out myself. The problem is…it’s a jumbled mess. You have two organizations that are working against each other for the same cause, a villain that has 2 completely different plans going on at the same time, and characters that seem to team up for the smallest of reasons. Once you feel like you know where things are going, things change on you, and not for the better. There are just too many things that aren’t addressed and even more that need better explanations. It may be to flesh out a trilogy, but I’d be much happier with a longer, more consistent film.

The characters are just about as bad as the story is. Some of them switch loyalties for no apparent reason while others aren’t given enough character to begin with. Everyone is a one-sided personality that is designed to create a unique group of people. Even the “love story” element is ultimately lost because there just isn’t anything to back it up. Given how many characters are in the film, it’s forgivable to have a few characters that aren’t deep, but the entire cast could use some depth. And that’s really a shame given the actors that were chosen for the film.

Action/Choreography

There are a lot of times where the story is forgivable if the action is good, but this is not one of those times. The fights are just too basic, as if everyone is just going through the motions. The end fight had a glimmer of hope, but it was quickly diminished as it continued on. The biggest issue with the fights are the powers that each character uses; there’s no explanation of what each person is capable of. One character can read minds, use telekinesis, track people, and do other things I can’t even remember anymore. It would have been much better to have each character specialize in 1 trait and use it to the fullest, instead you have powers that overlap and others that don’t make any sense.

Own it, Watch it, Try it, or Skip it?

When I first heard about the Four, I was really excited for it. Sadly, all of that was for nothing, as the film is really hard to recommend. You’ll be disappointed if you are an action fan, looking for a Mr. Vampire type supernatural movie, or even a good action movie. I’m worried because of the fact that the second film is already filming, meaning it may be too late to fix any issues that arise. Save yourself the time and avoid this one.

Sequel to the Four is Now Filming

by kmiller

Yesterday I told you that Tai Chi 0 was releasing a sequel right after the original. While this isn’t as close, the sequel to the Four has now started filming. It has been confirmed that Anthony Wong, Collin Chou, and Cheng Taican will be reprising their roles.

I’m curious as to whether Crystal Liu will be coming back. The movie just released on the 12th, so I don’t know anything about the film. I’ve also heard that parts 2 and 3 will be filming back to back. While I’m excited to hear that the movies will be done quickly, I’m worried about this new “trend.” Do people really have so much faith in their films that they’ll keep making them before public feedback? What if it sucks or needs rewriting? I get the fact that it’s hard to snag all the actors between projects, but this kind of worries me a bit.

Either way, I’m eager to see the first film and see if it lives up to my expectations.

The Four has Werewolves and Zombies

by kmiller

Well, it looks like I couldn’t make it a week without some more news on the Four. I’ve known that this movie would have zombies, but they have been pretty absent in the trailers so far. Thankfully, a fresh back of images have been released that show some of what we can expect, including werewolves.

It appears that Deng Chao, who plays a detective in the film, slowly becomes a werewolf as the film progresses. This can lead to some pretty interesting story elements and maybe some cool fights as well.

To be honest, I’m really done looking at pictures for the past few weeks. Give us a new trailer!

The Four will be released on July 12th

Images for Wu Dang and the Four

by kmiller

For some reason, the people promoting the Four must really like Crystal Liu. I mean, she’s  in practically every picture they release. Not that I’m complaining or anything.

Anyways, here are some images of the Four for you guys to enjoy:

Wu Dang also got some more images released, though they wont’ do much for you if you already didn’t care about the film.

Both of these movies are very different in style, and it will be interesting to see how they do when they are released. Wu Dang already released a final trailer, but I’m still waiting on the Four to do so.

New Trailer for the Four

by kmiller

Even though I just posted a fresh batch of images earlier in the week, the Four continues to release a steady stream of media in order to promote the film. The cast and the crew, as well as the author of the original novel, attended a press event to promote the Four.

During this event, another trailer was released:

While I feel like the shorter trailer packed a bigger punch, I’m still happy to see more of what this film has to offer. I really don’t think the “horror” element is even valid anymore, but that won’t keep me from watching it.

I’ve been interested in the Four for a while now, and there are some new images that have come out as the release date nears.

I don’t think the film will really be that scary, in case there are any other scaredy-cats out there (doubt it.) Check out this trailer if you wanna see how action-packed this film is going to be:

I can’t wait til the release date of July 12th! This may be one I’m gonna get ASAP and review!
