You might think that a movie that has Sammo Hung and Yuen Wah in it is always an attention grabber, but that’s not always the case. Princess and the Seven Kung Fu Masters is a film by Wong Jing, and it’s a slapstick-comedy that will be great for some, but irritating for others. The movie is essentially a spoof of popular movies and ideas, which has been done time and time again in Chinese cinema.
Give the synopsis a read below:
During the early years of the Republic era, in the North-East region of China, the people are suffering from the power struggle among the local Warlords, bandits, and Japanese invaders. Warlord Lam (Sammo Hung), is not a leader of great vision, but stands firm in his own beliefs. The only paradise within the region is ‘Lucky Town’, the one place where no one dared to attack as it was protected by the seven kung fu masters who have resided there. When young patriots, Yan Fang (Rose Chan) who disguised herself as a man, and Howard Luo (Dennis To), infiltrate Tiger’s Den at night trying to steal the code book fail in their mission and tries to run, only Yan survives and is rescued by Cheryl. Mistaking Yan as a man, Cheryl falls for Yan. She then brings Yan to Lucky Town and begs the Seven Masters to cure Yan. Cheryl and the Seven Masters are then told of the secret plan by the Japanese, and together, they resolve to fight against Tiger Den and save Warlord Lam.
The synopsis doesn’t really sound that bad, but the trailer is really what bothers me. Give it a look and see how you feel:
I really don’t know how I feel about this movie. Part of it might have to do with the fact that the film makes fun of the same movies the stars are in, or the humor just isn’t clicking with me. Even though there are a number of big names attached to this movie, I think I’m going to go ahead and wait to see how this one does.
Lot of good stuff this week. I’m worried about the Police Story 2013 poster, but Universal Soldier looks pretty solid. What are your thoughts on the Man with the Iron Fists clip?

New Trailer and Stills for the Last Tycoon (UPDATED)
Some new info has been coming out about Chow Yun Fat’s next film which also stars Sammo Hung and Francis Ng. The film is directed by Wong Jing, and it’s got all of the right elements to be amazing. Check out the trailer to see Chow Yun Fat return to form:
Of course, that’s not all I’ve got. Here are some awesome images that appear to be from a large-scale battle in the film. Looks like there is going to be equal amounts of blood, bullets, and brawling in this film. I approve!
I’ve gotta say, this movie is looking pretty amazing. In fact, the entire month of December is going to be an intense month for action movie fans; we’ve got a lot to look forward to.
(UPDATE) Found some more images on Asian Movie Pulse
The Last Tycoon is a movie that has grabbed my attention for the time being. For starters, it has Chow Yun Fat and Sammo Hung in it. It also finished filming in a very short period of time, and they are already going into post-production in order to meet a December release date.
A teaser trailer for the film has been released, but it doesn’t really show much.
Now, I should go ahead and say that director Wong Jing stated that this teaser is not the complete version and that the music and everything is wrong. I have no idea how this made it online, to be honest.
I’m guessing that this movie doesn’t have much action in it, especially given the fast filming period, but I still want to see what this movie really has to offer. December is going to be a good month, and I can’t wait to see how everything pans out. You know, besides the Earth not really blowing up or whatever.
A lot of cool news for the week, I have no idea why this video is so short. Feel free to let me know how you feel about any of the news I cover, like Iko joining Man of Tai Chi.
Remember that movie that has Sammo Hung and Chow Yun Fat? Well, it’s done filming. While it was previously (and confusedly) known as Once Upon a Time in Shanghai, the movie tells the story of a gang leader who builds his empire in the 1920′s. The movie just had a wrap-up party, so all that’s left is post-production work.
What’s also interesting about the movie is that it will be released in December, competing with the Grandmasters and Chinese Zodiac. I’m a little worried about how quickly things got wrapped up. Either everything went smoothly, or there will be very little action and a lot of story in this one.
Either way, I”m curious to see how they promote the film and how it fares against the competition this December.
Okay, it looks like I made a mistake. The Once Upon a Time in Shanghai that stars Phillip Ng and Sammo Hung and is being produced by Wong Jing is not the same one as the one that stars Chow Yun Fat and Sammo Hung which is directed by Wong Jing. Get that? Yeah, me neither. However, there is a teaser trailer for Phillip Ng’s Once Upon a Time in Shanghai.
While this doesn’t really show any footage, I like the old-school feel it gives off. It lets you know what Yuen Woo Ping will be choreographing the action while letting Ng’s action’s speak for themselves. I’m excited to see where this project goes.
Next up is a trailer for a movie called Angels. It stars Dustin Nguyen and I gotta say, the trailer looks pretty slick.
I know Dustin from being in the Rebel, and I thought he was an awesome villain. However, I didn’t realize how English-heavy this film was going to be. It will be directed by Wych Kaosayananda and has a number of action veterans listed, including Gary Daniels.
No release has been announced yet, but Angels should be coming out later this year.
Pretty big news coming out at the beginning of the week about 2 of the biggest stars in the industry. Chow Yun Fat and Sammo Hung will be working together for a true crime film titled Once Upon a Time in Shanghai. Andrew Lau will produce the film while Wong Jing will direct.
Before I get any of your hopes up, I don’t think this has anything to do with any of the “Once Upon a Time in…” films. Firstly, it’s a crime film, so that pretty much proves it won’t be a Wong Fei-Hong film. In fact, it will actually follow a crime boss known as Du Yuesheng.
Details are scarce at this point, so I’m not sure what genre this film will fall into. I think it’s safe to say that it will be either a gun-blazing action film or a deep crime-thriller. Either way, I know that Chow Yun Fat and Sammo Hung have what it takes to deliver. Let’s hope they don’t put this awesome talent to waste.
